An experience not to be missed!
We decided to celebrate a birthday at the recently reopened Big Fish. We were a little unsure what to expect. It was a good venue before Irma, what would it be like this time?
We were not disappointed at all. It is lovely there. A lot of effort has gone into the redecorating.
We booked for an earlier sitting as it was a week night and we had small children (almost 3 and 6.)We chose to sit inside where there is family style dining if there are small groups – or the table will accommodate a large party.
I did not take pictures of the outside dining area (silly me,) it is lovely covered area with the with built in “bunkies” scattered with cushions around the perimeter and big and small tables with some large, comfy chairs or regular seating tables in the center of the room. Large chandeliers hang from the ceiling.
The overall colour is white, a perfect foil for the divine plates set before you. The waitstaff are dressed in contrasting black.
One’s overall impression is modern, clean lines with a little quirkiness – which never goes amiss, does it.
The bar is still there taking up a long wall down one of the inside walls. We sat right next to the open kitchen and could see the intense concentration of the plating done by the chef.
With the classiness of the plating that is tops the quirkiness of the basket of bread in “newsprint” made for a fun contrast.
Every little detail of every dish sent out was paid the same attention – superb!
Menu
The plates we enjoyed as our starters were two different fish tartare and the lobster bisque which was delicious.
My main was scallops, cooked to perfection, with a curry flavour. I can’t resist scallops but I don’t like peas and overlooked that they were in the dish. I passed the peas onto my other half who wanted to know why I was so fussy, because they were fantastic.
The children shared a superb hamburger. So often they are tough as old boots, but not this one. Succulent and enjoyed immensely with chips in a basket – not a morsel was left.
Perhaps the dish we all loved the most was the seared tuna topped with a sushi roll – can you say divine!!!!!
Chef Lesley Martina is a master of his craft.
We could not help but try to take a few pics of plates being whipped past us on the way to other diners who, I am sure, fully enjoyed their orders. I am not sure what these dishes were but just look how yummy they appear in the way they were plated.
Special Touch…
Being a celebration we enjoyed the obligatory dessert with the sparkler. A solid round of “Happy Birthday” sung by the waitstaff made for a fun ending. It was all fabulous.
The nicest touch at the end of the meal was the hot cloth and the tasty fennel and anise seed refresher.
All in all, this is one restaurant you do not want to miss. We thoroughly enjoyed all aspects of our experience; from the discreet and quick service, to the ambiance, delicious food and good wine list!
